Self-Care Week: Get your flu vaccination

Wednesday's self-care tip: Get your flu vaccination

Yearly reminders from the CCGs and Public Health bodies across North West London have begun, with residents covered by West London CCG being encouraged to get their flu vaccinations as the winter months approach.

The vaccination is critical in particular for people with long-term conditions, children aged 2, 3, and 4, and over 65-year-olds. Flu vaccinations are available via your GP and many pharmacists and most young children will be able to receive a nasal spray instead of a jab.

Where primary school age children have been given the nasal spray it has been shown that:

  • GP consultation rates for ‘influenza-like’ illnesses are 94 per cent lower among primary school aged children and 59 per cent lower among adults
  • Respiratory-related A&E attendances are 74 per cent lower among primary school aged children
  • Hospital admissions for confirmed influenza are 93 per cent lower among primary school aged children
