St Charles Gym to re-open

The gym at St Charles health and wellbeing centre is to reopen following the announcement that additional funding has been found to pay for it.

Closure of gym has been on the cards for some time, but discussions between West London CCG and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea have borne fruit and they have agreed to fund the gym which will reopen after refurbishment has taken place and details of the new provider confirmed. The gym will remain open until the refurbishment of the local leisure service is complete.

Dr Fiona Butler, Chair of West London CCG, said: “Although the gym is popular with the people who use it, it was underused and not a service that the NHS has traditionally provided.  We have looked long and hard to see if it is a service we want to continue to support and are pleased to say that we have decided to provide the funding to allow the gym to reopen with a new operator who will have experience in running gyms elsewhere.

“The new operator for the gym will be tasked with growing membership and marketing the specialist service to local GPs so that they can refer patients to the gym for support.  We will also ask them to encourage women, mothers and children and BME communities to use the gym.

"There will be a short period of closure, to allow for some improvement works in the gym.  A firm date for reopening will be confirmed once the agreement with the new provider has been signed."
