Seven day services showcase
Leading by example, NHS North West (NW) London took an afternoon out to showcase the success of our seven day services at a London-wide event run by NHS England and NHS Improvement.
Leading by example, NHS NW London took an afternoon out to showcase the success of our seven day services at a London-wide event run by NHS England and NHS Improvement. The event bought together CCGs, clinicians and hospital service providers to discuss delivering the four priority clinical standards to improve care for patients and provide consistently high quality services in our hospitals every day of the week.
The four priority standards are:
- Time to first consultant review
- Access to diagnostic services
- Access to interventions and key services
- Transfer to community, primary and social care.
For patients in NW London, these standards mean patients:
- Will be seen by a clinical decision maker on admission to hospital every day of the week
- get any necessary test results within 24 hours of the test being requested
- have access to emergency procedures or surgery at any time
- will be safely and appropriately discharged from hospital with community care in place every day of the week.
As the first region in London to find innovative ways to deliver the priority standards, a team of clinicians and senior leaders from NW London attended the London Clinical Commissioning Group and Acute Provider Seven Day Services Support Event to offer NHS colleagues practical advice on how to tackle the challenges in delivering seven day services. Advice shared included our new models of care for hospital inpatients, approaches to engaging with clinical leaders and our system wide approaches governed by our Sustainability and Transformation Plan.
The group agreed that one of the biggest challenges faced was in not having enough staff and resources to run services seven days a week. Alan Kaye, Diagnostic Services Manager at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust presented our Radiographer Career Framework as our approach to this challenge. The first of its kind, the framework has been successful in helping staff to see the opportunities available in NW London, where they can go and what they can do to advance their careers.
